Description:Welsh Music Promoters SWN are curating three more very special free live music performances each Thursday evening this month at the National Museum Cardiff as part of Artes Mundi - Wales International Art Exhibition and Prize. After dazzling performances these past two weeks from John Smith, Colorama, Richard James and Georgia Ruth, six more musicians will take to the stage in the foyer of the National Museum over the coming three weeks.
Performances take place at 6.00pm and 8.00pm (acts and times below), with a free tour of the Artes Mundi exhibition at 7.00pm. There’s free coffee tasting on offer from Starbucks too, plus food and drink available from the cafe. All you need to carry you from work, meet up with some friends, and enjoy a relaxing early evening of entertainment.
Thurs 22nd April HUW M (8.00pm) Steeped in the history of Welsh folk music (all the songs are sung in Welsh), Huw M’s debut album sounds like the kind of record Gruff Rhys would be shouting about if he’d found it behind the sofa of his grandmother’s house, or at the back of some obscure record shop in Aberavon. Reminiscent of Super Furry Animal’s Mwng album, Huw M blends this fine Welsh reference with a little Beirut and Sufjan Stevens too. There’s some beautifully delicate playing – the strings shimmer whilst the shuffling drums skip across Huw’s voice - some inventive production and, most of all, incredible songs.
CHRISTOPHER REES (6.00pm) Following recent UK tours with American greats like Kristin Hersh, The Handsome Family and Chuck Prophet, the tremulous murder ballads, Appalachian bluegrass and twisted rockabilly of Christopher Rees’ fourth album ’Devil’s Bridge’ earned him widespread critical acclaim. Driven by his commanding and ever passionate voice, razor sharp banjo riffs, wailing harmonica and 50’s twang his solo shows are a one man tour de force. “A spit and sawdust holler that’s as close to a Southern hell-fire preacher as you can get hailing from Cardiff. Very, very good”. MOJO
